Some of our programs are not available for the spring semester, so I encourage you to look at our  Transfer Open and Closed List. The application also includes an essay. The essay is an important factor in your application evaluation. It is your opportunity to tell us more about you as an applicant and why you want to study in that particular program. It will be short (only 300 words!) so take your time and make sure you answer the prompt in full. You have the option of choosing a second-choice major, which can increase your chance of admission. Applying to a second choice does not disadvantage you from admission to your first choice program; it will just provide us another program to consider you for if you are not admissible to your first choice. If you choose two programs, you will also have to write an essay for your second choice major. Be sure to write another essay and make it specific to that program. Don’t just copy and paste, we will know! The elements of the Army’s culture are the basis for ethical conduct. Soldiers have been taught to uphold and live by the Army Values but they have not necessarily been taught to remain a professional while upholding these standards. By instilling ethical and moral value into the professional soldier the military is ensuring that all soldiers, even lower level soldiers, are able to make complex and tactical decisions for a strategic effect. To monitor the transformation the Army has created the Center for the Army Profession and Ethics campaign which is known as CAPE. The Army has decided to introduce the Campaign for the Profession of Arms to develop leaders of character and competence required to meet the dynamic challenges of the 21st Century. This campaign is designed to define and reinvigorate what it means to be a professional in the Profession of Arms. As we embark on this mission, we must reflect on the values and traits that define and distinguish us as a unique profession† (LTG Caslen, 2011). After careful review of The Center for the Army Profession and Ethics campaign I noticed several steps that the campaign has taken to reach soldiers of the 21st Century. One of the most crucial steps that I have noticed is the advance in social media. CAPE has realized the importance of sites like Twitter and Facebook and has created links to reach the social networking soldiers. The campaign has also begun to reach soldiers by utilizing the media streaming network YOUTUBE. In the new Army transformation, all of these advances are great steps and will aid in the success of the Professional of Arms. Ultimately, the success of organizations transformation and adapting of the Profession of Arms depends on the commitment of all soldiers and leaders. If soldiers are unable to learn or unwilling to learn, based on the arts and sciences of professionalism the Army will not be able to move past the last decade of war. Our country has placed special trust and confidence in soldiers as individuals and in the Army as an institution to perform our duties. Exemplary duty can achieve a trust relationship with Americans and a high vocational status. The ethical improvement will demonstrate both effective military expertise and the proper employment expertise. The Profession of Arms outlook will bridge the gap between civilian professional and warrior. I’m excited about the implementation of professionalism. I want my soldiers to be able to transform from a warrior to a professional before the end of their military career, this way they are prepared when their obligation is over and are not at a disadvantage. There are a number of reasons the government should not get involved in banning the sale of video games. Parents should be responsible and take care of their children. Proponents claim that that the government should ban violent video games for a number of reasons. They claim that research has shown that violent video games affect young people in both short and long term. This leads children to criminal and antisocial behavior. Parents don’t actually know how violent video games actually are and use them to keep their children busy while they are minding their own business so there is no parental supervision. The government has taken interest in this since many people believe that the role of the government is to protect society and its citizens from damaging society as a whole. The government would require a great deal of money to stop the sales of video games. Many known researchers have found that there is no link between violent behavior and video games. The most recent study was performed by Patrick Kierkegaard at the University of Essex, England; it suggested that there is no link between violent video games and violent behavior. Kierkegaard explained that the effect seems to be the exact opposite and one might argue that video game usage has reduced real violence (Kierkegaard). He also states that it is possible for certain types of video game to affect emotions, views, behavior, and attitudes, however, so can books. These can also lead to violent behavior on those already predisposed to violence. Nevertheless, many of the video games that are found to be violent are not created for children. These games are written for adults and have an effective rating system implemented on them. One such rating system is the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). It was created by the major video game manufacturers due to pressure applied by concerned groups about the content on video games. Many game companies now submit their products for rating by the ESRB. A number of factors are considered when rating games. They include the amount of violence, sex, profane language and substance abuse. The ESRB then gives an age recommendation and a content description to the games submitted. This rating system allows parents to know what each game contains and allows them to make responsible decisions for their children. As evidence shows, it would not be wise for the government to get involved in this. Parents play a large role in development of their children. They are the ones that go and buy the games for the children without paying attention to the safety measures already in place. By the 1800’s slavery was an institution throughout the South, an institution in which slaves had few rights, and could be sold or leased by their owners. They lacked any voice in the government and lived a life of hardship. Considering these circumstances, the slave population never abandoned the desire for freedom or the determination to resist control by the slave owners. The slave's reaction to this desire and determination resulted in outright rebellion and individual acts of defiance. However, historians place the strongest reaction in the enlisting of blacks in the war itself. Looking Backward: 2000-1887 Edward Bellamy's "Looking Backward: 2000-1887" was an attempt to show Americans who desired the utopian sense of community what it could truly be. Looking Backward addressed the yearnings of a society stricken by economic panics and social collapse by proposing an Eden-like community in which war, hunger, greed and malice were eradicated from society. While the story followed the wonderment of Julian West as he awoke in a Boston of 2000 AD after 113 years of sleep, the text focused on Bellamy's description through the kindly and omniscient character, Dr. Leete of a "post-revolutionary" society which emancipated the individual from the horrors of capitalism. As the story progresses, it becomes obvious that Bellamy is simply trying to suggest ways in which to improve his own society at the time whether it be politics or business practices. The first thing Julian inquires about his the problem of labor strikes, something very prominent in his time due to the newly formed labor unions. "The National Labor Union (NLU) hailed the virtues of a simpler America, when workers controlled their workday, earned a decent living, and had time to be good citizens" (Davidson, Nation of Nations, 626). Dr. Leete explains that with generous capital, any worker with a decent idea can become his own boss and the need for unions and strikes desisted. This was something that had begun occurring already in Bellamy's time, as had monopolies. This was the second step in the eradication of strikes as companies began to aggregate and form large syndicates. Finally, the largest syndicate of all, the government took over all industry. "When it was proposed that the nation should assume their functions (corporations), the suggestions implied nothing impractical even to the timid" (Bellamy, Looking Backward, 67). With this in mind, Julian asks who the enemies of the government are, whether they are other nations or natural ills. Dr. Leete responds with the mind-blowing realization of a perfect society. "We have no wars now...but in order to protect every citizen against hunger, cold, nakedness, and provide for his physical and mental needs, the function is assumed of directing his industry for a term of years" (Bellamy, Looking Backward, 68). The next major question was unemployment. During the any era, this is always going to be problem. Though a person who is educated can generally get a job, an uneducated person can only do menial labor. In the 19th century, there weren't enough jobs to go around so many were forced to beg or wait in long lines outside factories for work. However, the so-called industrial army provided jobs for one and all not to mention free and mandatory education up to the equivalent of college. Then, based on what people were good and wished to do, they were placed in their permanent jobs for which they worked until 45, the age of retirement. Another problem with employment was wages. In the 19th century, wages were on the average very low with the average worker having to spend nearly all their money on food and shelter without room for luxury. Now, everyone earned the same thing and it was his or her hours of work that varied from job to job. Even if everyone worked, problems would still occurred with production in the 19th century. Since producer has no clue as to how much of a certain product was needed by the population, there was almost always a surplus or lack of a certain product. In the new society, distribution was carefully calculated by an average consumption rate. Thus there is never a shortage and any surplus can be given to other nations. Another problem was the schism between the rich and the poor. There wasn't enough of a median for the two groups to interact except with through work-hire relationships. The real problem was money, something this world didn't have. This also eliminated the need for crime since everyone had the same amount and no one was jealous of anyone else's property. The last two problems were female and child labor. In the 19th century, both of these two groups still worked but were paid less and often were treated much worse. Women nowadays were part of the same system men were and were paid equally. In fact, Dr. Leete felt they should be paid more. "Can you think of any service constituting a stronger claim on the nation's gratitude than bearing and nursing the nation's children?" (Bellamy, Looking Backward, 188). Coming to America Essay Coming to America Essay My Journey To The Golden Land, The United States of America Troy Gardner HIS/120 – U.S. History 1865 to 1945 Instructor: JAMES HARRISON May 2012 University of Phoenix I am glad I chose to leave our homeland. The constant flooding kept destroying our home and with the lack of jobs, the money situation was being used as quickly as it was earned. Many people in our village had become sick and died due to disease from destroyed food supplies. Lack of food and no means to take care of my family forced me steal food and supplies from others. Unable to provide consistent meals forced my family to become terminally ill as well. Unfortunately, with the gradual death of my wife and children, I decided that there was really nothing holding me here in our village. Other villagers had packed up and spoke of the â€Å"Golden Land† in America. People who had already left spoke of many opportunities such good fertile soil for healthy and plentiful crops, schools for children, jobs, and plenty to eat. Finally, no one would have to worry about starvation. I watched as many families parted as the men and oldest child would leave and go to America s o they could both work to make enough money to afford the expense of bringing the remainder of the family over to be with them. With nothing really holing me here, I will be traveling alone, since my family had all passed on due to illness. I made my way to the shipping port with literally no money in my pockets. I knew I had to find a way to get on the next ship so I too could enjoy the fruits of the â€Å"Golden Land†. I managed to beg for scraps of food and mere pocket change of folks that would help me out. Since I was a hell of a card player, I figured I would try to hustle some money from others by playing poker. There were four other men and one woman playing poker in the alley and I joined the game. Quickly making a good sum of money, slowly as other players were reaching into empty pockets, I was becoming more and more confident about earning my fair to America. One of the other players, completely out of money, put up his boarding pass as part of the winning pot. My nerves were very stressed at seeing this. Know I had a crappy hand, I decided to try and bluff my way to that boarding pass, so I decided to take a gamble and go all in with my current winnings. Miraculously, I won!! â€Å"America, here I come!!† I shouted. The boarding pass was only good for steerage, the very bottom level of the ship, which is where most of the other immigrants also had to travel. Upon boarding the vessel, all people boarding had to undergo an extreme health check up. I notice that all the men and boys had to get their hair cut really short and girls and women had to have their thoroughly combed for lice. The reason for this, was shipping companies were held responsible for returning unhealthy people back to their homeland. The journey took about forty days to get from Europe to a place called Ellis Island. During the travel, people would go up on the open decks of the ship if the weather were pleasant. We ate slightly warm soups, some br eads, boiled potatoes, and stringy meat, most likely beef. Much of the food that was given to the steerage passengers looked like left overs and things that should have been thrown away. During below deck time, people often played simple games like marbles or checkers, while others visited with family and friends, or people from other places that were also traveling to America. The journey wasn’t always pleasant; there were severe storms and even illness, which did make some people perish. It is said that the huge statue there was the gateway to freedom. Once we reached Ellis Island, there were more doctors and specialist that had to check everyone who came off the ship. Folks that passed with a clean bill of health were allowed to leave Ellis Island and start their new lives. Others were not as fortunate. If they were deemed unhealthy,
